Rather than recognizing the artist’s opinions and feelings through their art like we often can in contemporary society, we must recognize the relative disconnect between art and artist. Additionally, the contract an artist signed could constrain other elements such as materials used and time frame to finish the piece. Most importantly, the patron could approve a sketch from which the artist could not deviate. In contrast, artists in 15th-century Italy were largely constrained in how they executed commissioned pieces. While it might have a specific purpose (such as murals as public art), the artist generally has some artistic license for how they execute the piece. The relationship between art and artist is different in our lifetime in which we can likely assume that a piece of art is produced by the artist and largely from their own mind. As amateur scholars of art history, understanding the impact and background of patronage is vital to influencing how we view art funded by a patron. That’s okay for them to want because people like their winners." I stayed consistent for a number of years at a high level, but I never really broke through to that next level. Smith walks readers through her marriage and the birth of her two children, reveals the behind-the-scenes of her successful creative career, and details her emotionally and logistically painful divorce.ĭue to her celebrated poetry prowess, it’s no surprise that Smith is an excellent writer. Best known for her 2016 poem “ Good Bones” - a work that continues to go semi-viral on social media in moments of national mourning - her memoir, “You Could Make This Place Beautiful,” renders her more vulnerable than any poem ever could. In her latest book, Smith - poet by trade, memoirist by necessity - covers lots of ground. If any readers remain uncertain as to whether personal challenges inspire the best art, Maggie Smith’s “You Could Make This Place Beautiful” may win some over. It might make you think that the dialogue is smart, witty and sharp. The blurb might lead you to believe that the writing is full of intelligence and research. If anything, the characterization has degraded. It's enough to say that nothing about the writing has improved. I don't know why three pen names are necessary in the same genre and why two of those pen names are even in the same subgenre! I never would have bought this book if I'd known that she wrote it. I'd already read Gentlemen Prefer Succubi, and disliked this author's writing intensely. What it doesn't say is that Jessica Sims in a nom de plume for Jill Myles and so is Jessica Clare. I read the author bio for Jessica Sims which says some shit about owning cats and playing games. It worked because for some reason I purchased this book and you might have too. If you are wondering why I'm quoting Myles' author blurb and why it exists on Jessica Clare's author profile and why it's applicable to a Jessica Sims' book then congratulations - it worked. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together. Author blurb for Jill Myles from the author profile for Jessica Clare:Īfter devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. |
